Soul Satisfaction:  A Study in Philippians "Workout"

Philippians 2:12-30

If we are going to advance the gospel of Christ, we must live with Christ-like character.

 Becoming Obedient . . .

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed . . .”

When I have a right view of God my response becomes one of humble gratitude, that produces in me both a desire and will to act in obedience.

·         He is God and I am not, therefore I humbly submit to His purposes and His ways.

o   Humbly submitting looks like obedient living.

Obedient Living . . .

“so now, (not only as in my presence but much more in my absence), work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

Obedient living is giving evidence of God’s great salvation that is at work in me.

·         As one saved by grace through faith, I am to work out, what God has already worked in.

o   “work out”—Persistent dedication and commitment to pursue becoming like Christ. (Galatians 4:19; 2 Peter 1:3-11; Romans 6:19; Ephesians 4:1-3; Colossians 3:1-17)

o   “God who works in”—God is working in us to desire and be determined to live for His glory.

§  Relationship vs. Religion

 Set Apart . . .

“Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine like lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life . . .”

A heart of humility cannot harbor secret discontent when it comes to obeying Christ.

The gospel witness is most effective when I have been transformed by the gospel and in obedience conformed to the image of Christ.

·         A life set apart to God will be in stark contrast to a life set against God.

 Holding Fast . . .

My life should unashamedly exalt the Word of God that Christ might be exalted above all.  (Psalm 138:2)
