Statement #5:
“I thirst.” John 19:28-30
Why Thirsty? . . .
- Jesus was thirsty because of the effects of a brutal death.
- Jesus was fulfilling what David had written in the Psalms.
“They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.” Psalm 69:21
“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” Psalm 22:14-18
“When you pricked Jesus Christ, when you stabbed Jesus Christ, he literally bled Scripture. He knew the Scripture so well, he thought about the Scripture so pervasively, it so saturated and permeated his whole being and his imagination and his feelings and his will and his knowledge that it shaped him instinctively. - There is nothing more affirming of the Scriptures than Jesus’ tenacious obedience to, and fulfillment of them.
- In Jesus’ most agonizing moments on the cross, what proceeded
from His mouth was what resonated in His heart.
- “I have stored up Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11
- Because Jesus had such high regard for the Scriptures, even more should we.
- Jesus may have been indicating His longing for His Father’s presence. (Psalm 42)
