MAIN SCRIPTURE (John 13:12-17) – “When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.’”
1. A Command for Disciples
John 13:34-35 – “Jesus said, ‘A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples; if you have love for one another.”
2. An Example from Jesus
Mark 10:43-45 – “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
3. A Blessing through Service
1 John 3:18 – “Let us not love with words or talk, but with actions and in truth.”
Less fighting.
More intimacy.
Less materialism.
More joy.
C. S. Lewis – “There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly face the possibly of being broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal.
