Foundational Truth #1: The GOSPEL - Christ alone is our confession.  (v 13-17)

“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. . . .” - C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity

“I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the rock of ages.” - Charles Spurgeon

Foundational Truth #2: The COMMUNITY - This Cornerstone is our connection. (v 18)

“Being a Christian is more fundamental to your identity than your family, your ethnicity, your profession, your nationality, your sexuality, your personality - or any other way this world defines identity.  And so the unity you share with every Christian supersedes every other bond.” From The Compelling Community by Mark Dever & Jamie Dunlop

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18

“All who agree with the confession of Peter are Peters themselves setting a sure foundation.” - Martin Luther

Foundational Truth #3: The MISSION - The Keys to the Throne are in our possession. (v 19-20)

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” - Matthew 16:19

“Then [Jesus] strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.” Matthew 16:20

“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
